Despite a massive snowstorm closing hundreds of East Coast theaters, Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant raked in $16 million in its third weekend in wide release to top U.S. box offices, while Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit $1.94 billion globally. The blizzard forced as many as 400 theaters on the East Coast and in North Carolina to close, including in New York City, which contributes as much as 7 percent of the overall box-office gross. The Revenant, the awards-favorite frontier epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, also came in first on the overseas chart for the first time, earning $33.8 million from 48 foreign markets for an international total of $223.7 million.
