An alleged gunman is dead after two New York City police were shot Thursday night while patrolling a public housing complex in the Bronx. Both officers were listed in stable condition and were reportedly alert, police representatives say. Around 8 p.m., two officers at the Melrose Houses building reportedly confronted a pair men drinking beer in a stairwell and asked for identification. According to the NYPD, one stood up to retrieve his wallet and then turned on the stairs and opened fire. That suspect was identified by friends as Malik Chavis, 23. The bullets hit a female cop in the torso and grazed a male officer’s face. Police say Chavis then shot and killed himself, just after telling friends, “I just shot a policewoman. I ain’t going back to jail,” according to the New York Daily News.
