Five Ku Klux Klan members who were arrested in connection to violent clashes with protesters in Anaheim, California, were released Sunday after evidence showed they acted in self-defense, police said. Three protesters were stabbed and two Klansmen were “stomped on” during the Saturday fracas. The Anaheim Police Department said photos, cellphone-camera footage, and witness statements corroborated the KKK members’ claims that they acted in self-defense. Seven people, who allegedly beat up the Klansmen, remain in custody. Violence erupted when six KKK members arrived at a park for a “walking protest.” A group of 30 counterprotesters showed up and a brawl broke out. Police added the case will be presented to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
