More than 50 statehouse demonstrators were arrested Monday night while protesting North Carolina’s new law rescinding protections for LGBT people and restricting bathroom access for transgender people. Hundreds of protesters convened outside Raleigh’s Legislative Building, while some went inside and staged sit-ins outside the offices of top lawmakers. Authorities arrested 18 people who entered House Speaker Tim Moore’s outer office and refused to leave. A total of 54 people will be charged with second-degree trespassing and for violating building rules or the fire code, said Acting General Assembly Police Chief Martin Brock. One person also faces a resisting-arrest charge.
