According to Pentagon officials, the military personnel who executed a deadly airstrike against a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, were not aware it was a medical facility and therefore did not commit a crime. Defense officials confirmed during a Friday morning press conference that 16 U.S. military personnel—including a two-star general—were disciplined because of the 2015 attack that left 42 people dead. Charges were not pressed, however, because while the hospital was properly entered on the military’s no-strike list, the gunship crew had no “ready access” to the list during the attack.
