The Marine Corps has launched an investigation into whether one of the men shown raising the American flag at Iwo Jima in the historic World War II photo was mistakenly identified. Omaha, Nebraska, native Eric Krelle and Stephen Foley, of Wexford, Ireland, first raised doubts about the identity of one of the men in the photo in 2014 to the Omaha World-Herald. The pair claimed one of the six servicemen identified, John Bradley, was actually Harold Henry Schultz, a private first class from Detroit. Schultz died in 1995. AP photographer Joe Rosenthal took the photo on Feb. 23, 1945, on Mount Suribachi, but didn’t get the names of the men. The photo was lauded by President Franklin Roosevelt, who told the military to identify those in the picture. The Marines did not give a timeline for the investigation.
