A Turkish court on Friday sentenced journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül to five years in prison, on charges of revealing state secrets. The pair, who published footage that allegedly showed Turkish intelligence officials shipping weapons into Syria, faced life in prison for alleged espionage. The ruling reignites a controversy over the Turkish government’s control over the press. Dündar also avoided an assassination attempt outside the Istanbul courthouse Friday, when a man called him a “traitor” and fired several shots, all of which missed.
