The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Eric Fanning as Secretary of the Army, the first openly gay leader of a military branch. Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) held up Fanning’s confirmation over his opposition to transfers of detainees to Kansas from the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Fanning was previously serving as the acting Secretary of the Air Force.
