Portland Mayor Charlie Hales decided Tuesday to place police chief Larry O'Dea on paid administrative leave just a day after a county sheriff alleged that the Oregon top cop had misled his deputy about a shooting on April 21. O'Dea reportedly shot his friend in the back while hunting last month and, afterwards, allegedly attempted to get his deputy to believe that the wound was self-inflicted; and he never identified himself as a police officer. O'Dea never disclosed the shooting publicly until reporters asked him about it. There is now a criminal investigation into the incident.
