Disney officially confirmed the production of a Mary Poppins sequel film, starring Emily Blunt as the title character and Broadway's Hamilton writer/star Lin-Manuel Miranda as a new character named Jack. While details of their casting had previously been announced, the mega-studio on Tuesday confirmed the movie, titled Mary Poppins Returns, will be helmed by Into the Woods director Rob Marshall. According to Disney, the plot will pick up two decades after the original film, with Poppins returning to visit now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, following a "personal loss." Miranda's character, a street lamplighter, will seemingly mirror that of Dick Van Dyke's iconic Poppins companion, the Cockney-accented Bert. The film will hit theaters December 25, 2018.
