Nearly 46 million people live as slaves globally, according to the third annual Global Slavery Index. The report, published by Australia-based human rights watchdog Walk Free Foundation saw an increase in its estimate of people born into servitude, trafficked for sex work, or trapped in debt bondage or forced labor from 35.8 million in 2014 to 45.8 million in 2016. According to the index, India houses the largest total number of slaves at 18.4 million; while North Korea is categorized as having the worst slavery problem, with one in every 20 people in bondage.
