A gunman who allegedly shot two Northern California officers was killed during a long standoff with police throughout Thursday morning. Several hours into the standoff, the house in which he sought shelter had gone up in flames. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to put out the flames while under threat from an armed suspect. Authorities said the wounded officers—of the Fremont Police Department—were shot when a traffic stop turned violent and spilled into a chase. One of the officers remained in critical condition early Thursday; the other is listed in stable condition. The suspected shooter was reportedly cornered in a Fremont home after an hours-long door-to-door manhunt. It is unclear how he perished.
