Twenty foreign hostages were killed by Islamic militants at a cafe in the capital of Bangladesh late Friday, the Bangladeshi military said. Militants stormed the cafe Friday evening with guns and explosive devices, resulting in an overnight standoff at the Holey Artisan Bakery that saw the Bangladeshi military sent in and foreign embassies put on alert. By Saturday morning, authorities had regained control of the bakery only to discover the bodies of 20 foreigners, most of them Italian or Japanese. Thirteen hostages were rescued and six of the attackers killed, according to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. One of the terrorists was taken alive, she said. The attack, for which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility, came as Muslims in the country were set to sit down for the first time to break fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.
