Dozens of people died in South Sudan after gun fights engulfed the capital city leading up to the country’s independence day. The fighting began after it was revealed that President Salva Kiir was meeting with a former rebel leader. An official death toll was not immediately available because soldiers were reportedly barring doctors from examining bodies. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011. It is the world’s newest country.
