German authorities now believe that more than 2,000 men may have participated in the New Year’s Eve mass sexual assaults and other related crimes on more than 1,200 women in Cologne and Hamburg. An internal police document obtained by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper shows a dramatic increase in authorities’ estimates—which had been at around 400 attacks. About 120 suspects have been identified to date, and only four have been convicted. More than half of the known suspects are foreign nationals who had recently immigrated to the country, officials say.
