Prominent journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed in a car bombing in central Kiev on Wednesday morning. He had been driving in a car belonging to the the editor-in-chief of Ukrainskaya Pravda, a publication known for its corruption exposés and a newspaper where Sheremet himself worked. An explosive device was found in the vehicle after the blast, according to the newspaper. The editor-in-chief, Olena Pritula, was not in the vehicle at the time. Both Pritula and Sheremet had recently complained of being followed, according to Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta. Sheremet was a well-known Belarussian journalist who had covered events in Russia and Ukraine. He was highly critical of Belarussian, Russian, and Ukrainian authorities, and won the 1998 Press Freedom Award for his reporting. He was 44. The co-founder of Ukrainskaya Pravda, Georgy Gongadze, was beheaded in 2000 for his work exposing corruption. While his killers were arrested, those who ordered his murder are still unknown.
