An attempted car bombing at a secure hotel for foreigners in Kabul led to a shootout between police and Taliban attackers Monday morning, leaving four dead. The three attackers attempted but failed to enter the complex of the Northgate hotel, instead detonating their vehicle next to it and killing one attacker and one police officer, Afghan police said. The ensuing gun battle saw another police officer injured and the two remaining attackers killed. The explosion caused a power outage throughout the city at around 1:30 a.m. local time, and it’s not clear if power has been restored. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, boasting of “over 100” casualties and claiming the attackers had made it into the hotel complex.
