Bill O’Reilly: U.S. Olympic Dominance Proves Racism Is Over
TORTURED LOGIC
The fact that American athletes dominated at the 2016 Rio Olympics proves the United States does not have an issue with how it treats minority populations, said Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. On Monday afternoon, the 66-year-old gasbag tweeted this head-scratcher of a take: “US dominates Olympics - how can this be if we are a terrible country that persecutes minorities? Press is deceiving world about the US.” While O’Reilly never explicitly mentioned minority U.S. medal winners—such as Simone Biles, Simone Manuel, and Gabby Douglas—his point was seemingly implied: How could a country that “persecutes minorities”—via highly publicized incidents of police abuse and racial injustice—have so many of them winning big on the global stage? The Soviet Union and East Germany dominated at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, making us wonder whether O’Reilly believes that fact absolved the two countries of their respective (and numerous) domestic issues.
