The Iranian government released Omid Kokabee, an Iranian native jailed while home from his graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, after nearly five years of detention. According to the country’s state-owned media, Kokabee will enjoy “conditional freedom” for the remainder of his 10-year sentence, after being freed in April to undergo treatment for a kidney condition. Kokabee was a physics student when he was arrested in February 2011 on charges of having “relations with a hostile country” and having received “illegitimate funds.”
