Thousands of protesters took to the streets of San Paolo on Sunday to reject Brazil's new president Michel Temer, calling his leadership a "coup." Demonstrators took over the city's main road, Paulista Avenue, holding banners that read "Out with Temer!" and "Direct elections now!" The protests reportedly turned violent on Sunday after clashes between demonstrators and police, prompting police to fire gas bombs and disperse the crowd. The protests come after Brazil's Senate voted on Wednesday to impeach Dilma Rousseff, accusing her of having illegally manipulated government accounts. Temer, a former vice president and Rousseff's sworn enemy, downplayed the protests. From the G20 summit, Temer told reporters the protests back home were by "small groups." "These are small groups ... I don't have it numerically, but they are 40, 50, 100 people. It's nothing more than that. Out of 204 million Brazilians, I don't think it means much," he was quoted as saying. Protest organizers say there were about 100,000 people taking part in the demonstrations.
