An 8-year-old boy in Midland, Texas was reportedly sent home from school for kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance. The boy, apparently inspired by NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s controversial protest, told local media he did it to demand “justice for black people getting murdered.” Stephanie Cook, the boy’s grandmother, told local media she was proud of the boy, identified only as Jaxon, for taking a stand. “I would have liked the teacher to do what was right,” Cook said. "He has the right to kneel, why make a big deal out of it?” she added. The Midland Independent School District offered a different version of events, however, saying the boy had been sent home over an “outburst” prompted by the teacher asking him to stand up. The school declined to provide any further details, citing privacy laws.
