Joe Biden is reportedly at the top of the short list to be Hillary Clinton’s pick for secretary of State. Politico cited an anonymous source as saying Clinton’s team is trying to figure out how to approach the vice president about the offer, who came close to running against her in the Democratic primaries but later supported her in the race. “He’d be great, and they are spending a lot of time figuring out the best way to try to persuade him to do it if she wins,” the source said. Biden chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before joining the Obama administration, and he boasts six terms in the Senate and two as Barack Obama’s top adviser. If chosen, Biden would continue to serve as point man on issues like Iraq and Ukraine. While Clinton and Biden worked alongside each other for many years, Biden has also clashed with the Democratic presidential nominee on issues like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. The other potential candidates for the position include former Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman; former Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns; Nick Burns, the former undersecretary of State of political affairs under George W. Bush; Strobe Talbott, the deputy secretary of State during Bill Clinton’s first term and a longtime friend of the Clintons; and James Stavridis, a retired admiral.
