The Supreme Court will hear a case involving transgender bathroom rights for the first time. A school district in Gloucester County, Va., does not want to be forced to allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity, rather than their birth sex. A law passed in North Carolina earlier this year said transgender students must use the public bathroom of the gender that appears on their birth certificate. Eleven states sued the Obama administration after it responded to the North Carolina law by mandating that transgender students have access to the bathroom which matches their gender identity. In the Virginia case, a federal court ruled in favor of a male student who was born female and was not allowed to use the men’s bathroom at his school.
