Sheriff Joe Arpaio lost his bid for a seventh term on Tuesday evening, amid facing criminal charges for contempt of court as he refused to comply with a court order to stop his office’s controversial racial profiling practices. The charges against Arpaio were announced just two weeks before Election Day and significantly hampered his chances for victory. Arpaio is known for his overly tough, often discriminatory policing methods; and for his penchant for controversial statements about immigrants. The long-time sheriff was an early endorser of Donald Trump, and lost the election to Democratic challenger Paul Penzone.
