In his first Sunday show interview since Donald Trump was elected president, House Speaker Paul Ryan told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he agrees with the president-elect’s desire to keep certain aspects of the Affordable Care Act, despite previous promises to repeal and replace it completely. Ryan said he was on board for continuing provisions that help those with preexisting conditions and allowing young people up to the age of 26 to stay on their parents’ insurance plans. But he stopped short of endorsing another of Obamacare's most popular elements: free birth control for women. “Look, I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty details,” Ryan said, to which Tapper shot back, “With all due respect, I don’t know that the average woman of childbearing years who relies upon contraception provided by health insurance mandated by the Affordable Care Act, I don’t know that she would think of that as a nitty-gritty detail.” Pressed to explain his own feelings on the importance of that provision, Ryan said he would not comment on “hypotheticals” of legislation that is yet to be written.
