Hanad Musse, a Somali man from Minnesota who was stopped at John F. Kennedy International Airport on his way to join ISIS, was sentenced to ten years in prison on Tuesday. Musse was stopped at JFK along with three other men in November 2014 on reports from the Minneapolis FBI branch that the men were suspected terrorists and on their way to join up with Islamic State militants. Musse pled guilty to conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, with the prosecution recommending 15 years in prison. His lawyer asked for six years, stating that "the easiest thing to do is to lock these guys up for as long as we can, but I don't think that's the best thing to do. I think we can save this guy, and I think we need to try to save this guy." Musse apologized to his family and community prior to his sentencing, acknowledging his "serious offense." The final sentence for Musse is 10 years in prison and 20 years of supervised release.
