A second Georgia Southwestern State University police officer died Thursday after he was shot Wednesday in Americus, Georgia, by a man identified as Minquell Lembrick. Officer Jody Smith succumbed to his injuries within 24 hours after his colleague, Officer Nicholas Smarr, who was also shot during the incident, died from his wounds. The unviersity released a statement describing Smith as “a bright, young and energetic officer.” Law-enforcement officials initially went on a manhunt for Lembrick, 32, but after a standoff he was pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted gun wound.
