The Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea was rocked by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake on Saturday. The earthquake hit an area about 29 miles east of Taron, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake was reportedly about 61 miles deep. There were no immediate reports of fatalities or injuries, but residents were advised to brace for a tsunami, prompting some people along the coastline to flee to higher ground. Just hours after the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned residents of Papa New Guinea and nearby areas of a possible tsunami, however, authorities said the threat had largely passed.
