Six people, including the president of the NAACP, were arrested late Tuesday after staging a sit-in at the Alabama office of Sen. Jeff Sessions to protest his nomination as attorney general in Donald Trump’s administration. NAACP President Cornell William Brooks tweeted a photo promising to stay until Sessions withdrew his name from consideration or until he and the rest of the protesters were “arrested.” He kept his word and later tweeted to announced that he and others were “about to be arrested.” The other protesters who were arrested include Alabama State Conference President Benard Simelton; Humanity in Action fellow Devon Crawford; Lizzetta McConnell, president of Mobile NAACP Chapter 5044; Stephen Green, national director of the NAACP’s youth and college division of NAACP; and Joe Keffer, according to local media. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to begin hearings on Sessions’s nomination on Jan. 10, as many NAACP chapters protest his appointment across the country. Sessions has been accused of having a history of racist statements and has long been viewed as an opponent of civil-rights measures.
