A Canadian woman has been detained in Turkey for a Facebook post in which she allegedly insulted President Reçep Tayyip Erdogan. According to her lawyer, Ece Heper, 50, was taken into custody on Dec. 30 in Kars, Turkey. Canadian officials have said they are offering Heper consular assistance. A friend told the BBC that Heper had posted on Facebook criticizing Erdogan just before the arrest. “It’s ridiculous, she’s expressing her opinion,” the friend told reporters. Heper lived in Ontario and is a dual Canadian-Turkish citizen. If she is convicted of insulting Erdogan, she could face as much as four years in prison.
