Vice President Joe Biden has urged President-elect Donald Trump to avoid investing in nuclear weapons, cautioning against a return to a Cold War mentality. “If future budgets reverse the choices we’ve made and pour additional money into nuclear buildup, it harkens back to the Cold War,” he said, speaking at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in D.C. “It will do nothing to increase the day-to-day security of the United States or our allies.” Biden’s comments came after Trump took to Twitter in December to say the U.S. “must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.” Biden made it clear that he believes such an attitude is only counterproductive, saying the focus should be on other areas of defense, like cybersecurity. Too much focus on a nuclear buildup, he said, “risks placing the theoretical power of a weapon we hope to God we never to use again above the tools the military uses each and every day.”
