A bus transporting Hungarian students crashed into a guard rail on an Italian highway on Friday night before catching fire, killing at least 16 people, police said. Thirty-nine people survived the crash, though 26 of them were injured, some seriously. “One passenger is currently in an induced coma and in life-threatening condition,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjarto said at a briefing on the crash in Budapest. The cause of the crash is still unknown, but Szijjarto said no skid marks were found at the scene, meaning the driver apparently did not try to stop. Girolamo Lacquaniti, the head of the traffic police in Italy’s Verona, told local media that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and authorities are still trying to determine how many people were on board. Hungary’s Foreign Ministry said 54 people were listed as being on the bus officially, though they believe that number was actually higher. Most of the students on board were between the ages of 14 and 18.
