Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Thursday morning that he will not attend a meeting at the White House scheduled for next Tuesday. Peña Nieto wrote on Twitter that he informed the White House of his decision this morning, which comes after he said his country will not pay for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. On Twitter earlier Thursday morning, Trump threatened to cancel the meeting given Peña Nieto’s refusal to fund the wall. Peña Nieto said his country “does not believe” in walls and “demands respect” from the new administration. Aboard Air Force One on Thursday, White House Press Secretary responded to the cancellation. “We will look for a date to schedule something in the future,” he said. “We will keep the lines of communication open.” Speaking at a GOP retreat in Philadelphia later in the afternoon, Trump said that he and Pena Nieto had “agreed” to cancel the meeting.
