A 15-year-old girl’s sexual assault was streamed on Facebook Live and none of the dozens of people who watched it reported the incident to police, authorities said Tuesday. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the assault involved as many as six suspects and that investigators are “making good progress identifying persons of interest.” Police learned of the attack on Monday afternoon, after the victim’s mother approached Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and showed him images of the alleged assault online. The girl’s family had reported her missing Sunday, saying she’d gone to the store and not returned. Family members later saw the live video of her alleged assault and alerted authorities. “What’s even more disturbing, more than the fact that they did this, there were so many people that saw this and they didn’t pick up the phone and dial 911,” Johnson told WGN-TV on Tuesday. Police said the video was watched by as many as 40 live viewers. A spokesman for Facebook said the video has been taken down. “Crimes like this are hideous and we do not allow that kind of content on Facebook,” the spokesman was quoted as saying. The victim’s identity has not been released, and police have not revealed any further details about the suspects.
