The first recipient of the American League “Rookie of the Year” award, Roy Sievers, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90. The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association announced the news on its official Twitter feed. Sievers, whose playing nickname was “Squirrel,” played 16 seasons in the MLB for the St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies. He appeared in four All-Star Games, and hit a total of 318 home runs. He won the AL Rooke of the Year award in 1949 for his debut season with the Browns in which he hit 16 home runs and 91 runs batted in.
