Four children were among 16 people killed Friday in Sri Lanka’s Colombo after a massive 300-foot trash dump collapsed and buried several homes. Witnesses said about 100 homes were buried in the incident, which occurred on the island nation’s traditional new year's holiday. More than a dozen people were injured, and residents said several others were missing. Army spokesman Roshan Senivirathna said more bodies were discovered Saturday as emergency workers continued their second day of rescue efforts. The government had been planning to remove the landfill under pressure from local residents, who complained that it was causing health issues. The collapse was thought to have been caused by a fire that broke out in the dump on Friday.
