A visit to Russia by Trump campaign foreign-policy adviser Carter Page prompted the FBI to launch a wide-ranging investigation into the campaign’s ties to Russia, The New York Times reports. Page was reportedly on the FBI’s radar after he gave documents to a Russian spy who attempted to recruit him in 2013. When Page traveled to Moscow and gave a Russia-friendly speech while advising the Trump campaign in July 2016, the FBI reportedly flagged some element of his trip. It is unclear what part of the three-day visit triggered the bureau’s suspicion. The Trump administration has since downplayed Page’s involvement in the campaign, describing him as a bit player.
