A Chicago jury convicted a 15-year-old of first-degree murder Wednesday in the 2009 beating death of a Chicago honor-roll student. The video of the attack on 14-year-old Derrion Albert was shot with a cellphone camera, and prompted President Obama to send Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to the city to discuss the gang violence that has claimed the lives of more than 20 public high-school students. The student convicted, whose name has not been released because he is a minor, had thrown a single punch, albeit the one that knocked Albert to the ground. The doctor who conducted the autopsy testified that punch was a “contributing factor” in Albert’s death.
