According to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the city will roll out body cameras for its police officers by the end of 2017, a year before the program was set to be completed. It’s an effort to improve transparency for a department that is under a federal civil-rights investigation. The project was launched at the beginning of 2015. In response to the investigation, Emanuel has introduced a new use-of-force policy and promised to add almost 1,000 new officers. “Body cameras, while not a panacea, are a win-win for officers and the public,” Emanuel said in a statement. “They provide a firsthand look at the dangerous situations officers encounter on a daily basis, and improve transparency while building trust.”
