Former CIA director Porter Goss was OK with the decision to destroy tapes depicting brutal interrogations of terror suspects in 2005—and even joked about it later. New documents obtained by the ACLU show that Goss "agreed" to the decision and an internal e-mail said that he "laughed and said that actually, it would be he, PG, who would take the heat" for the move. A message from the head of CIA's clandestine service at the time, Jose Rodriguez Jr., warned that the tapes would “look terrible; it would be devastating to us.” Top White House officials, including White House counsel Harriet Miers, were reportedly upset that they hadn't been told, according to the e-mails.
UPDATE: This cheat originally incorrectly implied Goss had advance knowledge of the tape's destruction.
