Clinton Reacts to Protests in Iran

Speaking on behalf of the White House, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced in a statement that she admired the "courage" and "aspirations" of the thousands of anti-government protesters in Iran and encouraged the country's leaders to follow Egypt's lead. Clinton told reporters that Washington wants to send the same, consistent messages to Iran's leaders that were made clear to Egypt's former President Hosni Mubarak. First, that they are against violence; second, that they support the universal rights of the people; and third, that they support political change and believe it would provide Iran's people with a brighter, more stable future. Demonstrators are marching in Tehran and reports say security forces are using tear gas on the crowd.
