Congressional leaders agreed Thursday to extend the Patriot Act for another four years, about a week before the controversial law was set to expire. Congress is set to vote on the measure, passed in the wake of the September 11 attacks and long debated as an infringement of civil liberties, within a week. Three key provisions would be extended under the vote—including a controversial measure from 2004 that allows for secret intelligence surveillance of non-U.S. citizens without having to prove any connection to terrorism. Some have questioned the act’s usefulness following the death of Osama bin Laden, but Attorney General Eric Holder has stressed “now more than ever, we need access to the crucial authorities in the Patriot Act.”
