The Conservatives are back in control of Canada, while the New Democratic Party, a movement with socialist roots, will be in the opposition. Steven Harper's right-wing party swept back into power with 167 seats, but the big news is the success of the leftist New Democratic Party, which won 102 seats—at the expense of the Liberals, who managed only 34. It marks the first time since Canada became a nation in 1867 that the liberals finished in third place. The rise of the New Democrats seems to have been a boon to Conservatives by splitting leftist votes with the Liberals. The New Democrats also enjoyed historically unprecedented success in Quebec, where many victorious new members of parliament are little known, inexperienced, or did not even campaign. Several are university students.
