A Madison, Alabama, police officer turned himself in for assault charges Thursday after being caught on video severely beating an Indian man who had gone out for a walk. Police Chief Larry Muncey told a press conference that he recommended that Officer Eric Parker be fired for use of force against the man, who had not committed any crime and spoke no English. The man, Sureshbhai Patel, had arrived in the U.S. only a week earlier to help take care of his grandson. He took daily morning walks, according to his son. Another man had dialed a non-emergency call to report a “skinny black guy” walking on the street because he had “lived here four years and I’ve never seen him before.” That call led to the violent confrontation, leaving Patel partially paralyzed.
