The Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile in July will be charged in the 32-year-old’s death, Ramsey County D.A. John Choi announced Wednesday morning. St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez will be charged with second-degree manslaughter, two felony counts of dangerous discharge of a weapon, thereby endangering Castile’s girlfriend and child. Castile’s death was livestreamed by his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, on her Facebook page, and the video went viral in the aftermath of the shooting. “Use of deadly force must be reasonable given the totality of circumstances," Choi said, adding, “it is not enough, however, for an officer to express a subjective fear of death.” He concluded, “Based upon our thorough review of the facts of the case, it is my conclusion that the use of deadly force by officer Yanez was not justified.”
