North Carolina police said in a press conference Friday afternoon that remains discovered yesterday are indeed those of Zahra Baker, the 10-year-old girl who had been missing since October 9. The discovery was announced Thursday by a source close to the investigation, but police would only confirm they had recovered important new information. "I've been dreading this moment [from] early on in this investigation," Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said. The police chief was visibly emotional during the press conference, and said he was "devastated" that he couldn't bring the missing girl to safety. Baker's stepmother is being held for writing a bogus ransom note, and her father was arrested on charges unrelated to his daughter's disappearance.
