A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy responding to a home-invasion call shot the homeowner in the neck when he refused to drop his gun, police said Thursday. Homeowner Brian Heyward, who is black, had called 911 when two gunmen broke into his home. The men had fled on bicycles when two deputies arrived on the scene and shot Hewyward, who was armed during the encounter, according to Sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson. The two deputies told Heyward to drop the weapon, but he refused and a deputy fired, Watson said. After he was placed in an ambulance, Heyward told the officers he exchanged fire with the two suspects. Police later arrested Thomas Zachary Brown as one of the gunmen and charged him with first-degree burglary and attempted murder. Heyward was undergoing surgery and his condition was not immediately known, Watson said. Dash-camera footage was expected to be released Friday.
