Kitty Wells, the first female superstar in country music, died Monday at age 92. The trailblazing crooner is best known for her hits “Making Believe” and “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels,” which was the first No. 1 song by a female solo artist on the country-music charts. Wells, who hit it big in the 1950s and remained a major Nashville star until in the late 1970s, recorded approximately 50 albums and had 25 Top 10 country hits throughout her career. “I never really thought about being a pioneer,” she told the Associated Press in 2008. “I loved doing what I was doing.”
