A federal judge’s vindication of Wendy Davis turned out to be short-lived Thursday when the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overruled him and put Texas’s strict new abortion law back into effect. The new law requires abortion providers to get admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their clinic—a requirement that may force many of them to close. A panel of three female justices from the 5th Circuit said Planned Parenthood had not shown that the law’s detriment to their interests was a “unique burden” on women seeking abortions, and that they expected the state to prevail in future appeals.
