Veterans gathered at Omaha Beach Sunday to mark the anniversary of D-Day. Sixty-six years ago, Allied troops initiated Operation Overlord by landing on the Normandy Coast to begin the invasion of France—a crucial turning point in World War II. A service was held in Bayeux, the first town to be liberated from the Germans, to honor the 215,000 Allied troops who were killed or wounded during D-Day and the three months it took to secure Normandy. In the U.S., Joint Chiefs chairman Adm. Mike Mullen is heading to Bedford, Va. to speak at a ceremony for the fallen.
